What a way to end a damp July, yet be lucky enough to find a dry period with some sun to enjoy IPA outings with others.
Thanks to Alex Williams the London Reception Officer, I together with a number of other IPA members were able to visit the Royal Hospital Chelsea on Friday 28th July 2023.
The home of the Chelsea Pensioners. These iconic buildings have been the home of retired army veterans since 1692. Although some parts were destroyed by enemy bombing during the second world war the buildings were quickly rebuilt and restored to their former glory.
Our tour guide for the visit was Chelsea Pensioner Bert Weastell, who told the whole story of the Hospital which was designed and built under the direction of Sir Christopher Wren, who in fact lived on site during its construction, having been commissioned by Kings Charles II.
As you would expect from an establishment steeped in military tradition every part of the hospital is kept in pristine condition. It was an absolute privilege to be able to visit and speak with Bert and some of his colleagues.
