Following the success of the Section UK IPA Walking Group Walking Weekend in Scarborough and Whitby in 2022, Scarborough Branch would like to provide you with early notification of the Group’s next venture, a Walking Weekend based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
Section UK members, family and friends are invited to save the dates and register their interest for the event, staying for two nights on a bed and breakfast basis.
Harrogate became known as ‘The English Spa’ in the Georgian period and was popularised through a boom in Spa tourism during the Victorian era. During the 1800s, the high society of Victorian Britain flocked to Harrogate to enjoy the air, the space and the therapeutic spa treatments as well as taking the famous Harrogate waters. The town’s most distinctive feature perhaps is its vast open space, known as The Stray, that surrounds the town centre. At 200 acres, The Stray gives Harrogate a green and spacious feel that is unique to the town. With plenty of Georgian and Victorian architecture, the town still maintains an elegant and opulent feel and is home to the renowned Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Harlow Carr Gardens. The acclaimed Betty’s Café Tea Rooms can also be found in the town centre. One of our walks will pass right by Betty's.
Harrogate has good road, rail and air transport links. By road, it is situated just a few miles from J47 of the A1(M). The town centre railway station has good connections from London, Leeds and York. Leeds Bradford Airport is less than 15 miles by road.
During the weekend, participants can take part in two British Walking Federation (BWF) Permanent Trails (PTs).
Planning for the event, including evening meals, is not yet complete and details will be circulated once confirmed however, it is expected the cost of two nights’ accommodation will be £140 for a double occupancy room or £120 for a single occupancy room, all with private facilities, on a bed and breakfast basis. The organisers of the event are making every effort to keep the costs of evening meals down to £20 to £25 per person per meal. There will also be a minimal charge to complete the PTs of £2.50 which will cover both walks.
